How many words is 1,000 tokens?
For English text, one token is roughly three-quarters of a word, so 1,000 tokens is about 750 words. Code, numbers and non-English text usually use more tokens per word.
Why are output tokens priced higher than input tokens?
Generating text is more compute-intensive than reading it, so most AI providers charge several times more per output token. Keeping responses concise is the quickest way to cut costs.
